Attack on Riyadh airport kills 12, injures 309

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi militants recklessly attacked Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport on Saturday, killing at least 12 people and injuring 309 others, Saudi officials said, in a brutal assault on civilian aviation infrastructure.

According to Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation, the casualties consisted of four Saudi citizens and eight foreign nationalities from Bangladesh, the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, and Sudan.

The assault was the Houthis’ third targeting the airport in a week and the bloodiest against Saudi Arabia in over a decade.

Earlier assaults claimed four lives and damaged a Saudi commercial aircraft.

The assault on a civilian airport garnered widespread outrage, raising worries about passengers’ safety and the rising danger to rural aviation.

US President Donald Trump slammed the attack as reprehensible and said that he will speak with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

He also said that Washington may consider joining the Saudi-led military assault against the Houthis.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged that an American was among those slain and condemned the actions.

The deadly strike caused significant disruption to air traffic, with around 260 flights canceled and 219 delayed on Saturday, according to flight-tracking data.

The escalation comes as Saudi-backed troops and Yemen’s internationally recognized government step up military operations against the Houthis, notably near the crucial Bab Al Mandeb Strait.

Despite the escalating battle, the Houthis have continued to launch assaults against Saudi targets while controlling Yemen’s capital Sanaa and most of the nation.

The devastating strike has heightened worries about regional security, with strikes on civilian facilities endangering international transit and raising the prospect of additional military escalation.
