1,200-year-old archaeological site discovered Iraq’s Babil

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The central Iraqi province of Babil announced on Sunday that an exciting archaeological site has been discovered.

Located in the al-Qasim district in the southern part of the province, the remains are believed to date back to the Abbasid era, a period of immense cultural, scientific, and architectural prosperity throughout Iraq.

The Governor of Babil, Ali al-Jamali, conducted an official site visit to examine the structural features, evaluate its historical context, and lay out administrative frameworks to safeguard the artifacts under strict national archaeological laws.

Local officials stressed that this discovery goes much beyond the previous statistics. Professional excavations and investigations are likely to provide additional details about ancient life centuries ago.

Officials are investigating legal alternatives for securely developing the area into a significant tourist destination, raising Babil’s global historical prominence.

The recent announcement follows the discovery of a large ancient city in Basra, dating back 1,200 years, as well as the uncovering of hundreds of ancient Islamic and Hellenistic artifacts revealed by rain at the Borsippa site, both occurring in 2025. This adds to a remarkable series of historical discoveries in Iraq.

The newly discovered archaeological site in Babil’s al-Qasim district provides a crucial physical link to the vast networks that powered the Islamic Golden Age. During the Abbasid era, Iraq was the undisputed geopolitical and economic center of the Islamic world.
