Jakarta, IO – The Forestry Ministry continues to emphasize its central role in maintaining the sustainability of Indonesia’s coastal ecosystems. Based on the 2025 National Mangrove Map, of the 3.45 million hectares of national mangroves—which represent approximately 23 percent of the global total—2.73 million hectares, or around 80 percent, are situated within forest areas under the purview of Kemenhut.
This was conveyed by Deputy Forestry Minister Rohmat Marzuki during his opening address to mark the World Mangrove Day at the Ngurah Rai Forest Park in Bali on Sunday. This national agenda was jointly initiated by the Environment Ministry/Environmental Control Agency (BPLH), Kemenhut, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry, and the Bali provincial administration.
“This gift of natural resources serves as a major mandate for Indonesia to lead global sustainable mangrove management. Protecting mangroves means safeguarding life while securing the future of coming generations,” Rohmat said.
He outlined Kemenhut’s track record and concrete steps in ecosystem restoration. By the end of 2025, the ministry, alongside its partners, had successfully rehabilitated 91,678 hectares of mangroves.
Continuing this commitment in 2026, it targets the rehabilitation of more than 17,000 hectares across various regions in Indonesia through cross-sector collaboration with development partners, which include Mangroves for Coastal Resilience (M4CR), Forest Program VI, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and Nature-based Solutions for Climate-Smart Livelihoods in Mangrove Landscapes (Nasclim).
Beyond environmental improvement, the rehabilitation and protection programs for mangrove forest areas have proven to deliver tangible socio-economic impacts for coastal communities.
“This collaborative support has created job opportunities for 64,386 people, supported the passage of 63 village regulations on the protection and management of mangrove ecosystems, and distributed Rp16.29 billion in community business grants. This demonstrates that mangrove rehabilitation is capable of restoring ecosystems while directly enhancing community welfare,” Rohmat explained.
On this basis, he highlighted three main pillars that serve as the foundation for future mangrove ecosystem sustainability.

“Therefore, commitment, collaboration, and innovation from all stakeholders are the keys to success in preserving mangrove ecosystems,” he noted.
This strategic move by the ministry aligns with the implementation of Government Regulation 27/2025 and the National Mangrove Ecosystem Protection and Management Plan (RPPEM) 2026-55.
Furthermore, it represents a concrete execution of President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita vision to harmonize life with nature, optimize blue carbon potential, and drive coastal community-based green economic growth.
The series of activities opened with a joint mangrove seedling planting effort at the Batu Lumbang Mangrove Ecotourism area within Ngurah Rai Forest Park, followed by a symbolic presentation of seedlings, a teleconference dialogue covering simultaneous planting across Indonesia, and an interactive discussion session on the management of mangrove forests.
Through this momentum, Kemenhut reaffirms its commitment to continue safeguarding the sustainability of mangrove forest areas at the site level for the sake of ecological safety and the welfare of Indonesia’s coastal communities. (des)
