Jakarta, IO – The Indonesian Government is stepping up efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s maritime and fisheries sector through a national fleet modernization program. Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono announced that the Government plans to build 1,582 fishing vessels, in phases, between 2026 and 2028. The initiative is part of a broader effort to boost national fisheries productivity while improving the economic well-being of coastal communities.
Of the total number of vessels to be built, around 1,000 will be 30-gross-ton (GT) fishing boats. These vessels will be prioritized for economic activities in Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih (KNMP), or Red and White Fishermen’s Villages, which are being developed as marine-based economic growth centers. The addition of new vessels is expected to increase fishermen’s catch capacity and expand their fishing grounds.
In addition to fleet development, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is preparing the human resources needed to operate the modern vessels. Crew training programs will be conducted through fisheries schools and involve coastal communities in KNMP areas. Through these programs, fishermen are expected to gain the technical and managerial skills needed to manage fleets professionally and sustainably.

According to Trenggono, fleet modernization is an urgent necessity to address future challenges in the fisheries sector. With more advanced vessels and technology, fishermen are expected to increase their catches, expand their operational range and improve efficiency. Ultimately, the program aims to raise the standard of living of fishermen and coastal communities across the country.
The national fishing fleet modernization program has also received support from international partners. During President Prabowo Subianto’s state visit to London in early 2026, the British Government expressed its commitment to support the construction of 1,500 Indonesian fishing vessels, through maritime cooperation between the two countries. The commitment is seen as a positive signal for strengthening Indonesia’s fisheries sector, while deepening strategic maritime ties between Indonesia and the United Kingdom. (IO/Faisal Ramadhan)
