Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday assured that justice will be delivered in the investigation into the death of singer Zubeen Garg, stating that the chargesheet will be filed within the prescribed three-month period.
Speaking to reporters during a government event in Dibrugarh, Sarma said the probe is progressing “as expected” under the supervision of the Special Investigation Team (SIT). “We have made successive arrests, and I am confident the Assam Police will submit the chargesheet on time. Justice will be served, and no one will be spared,” he said.
The chief minister emphasized that all accused will be produced before the court without delay. “The standard timeframe for filing a chargesheet is three months. We will adhere to it so that the court can deliver justice promptly,” he added.
Sarma noted logistical challenges, as most members of the Assam Association in Singapore, who were with Garg during his final moments, have yet to return, despite SIT summons. “We are arranging their return. Patience is necessary — rushing will not serve justice,” he said.
On the possibility of Assam Police visiting Singapore, Sarma clarified that investigators cannot operate in a foreign sovereign nation. “Just as foreign police cannot probe here, our officers cannot go there. But we expect full cooperation from the Singapore Police, including video footage from the hotel, yacht, and statements from the two operators,” he said.
Sarma further stated that he plans to meet the Singaporean ambassador to India later this month to facilitate cooperation, noting that forensic reports from Singapore have already been shared with Assam Police. “This will aid in submitting the chargesheet without difficulty. The investigation is thorough and meticulous,” he said.
He urged caution, stressing that emotions must not override due process. “We must be thorough. A rushed investigation could compromise the case in court,” he said.
So far, five people — Garg’s cousin Sandipan Garg, manager Siddhartha Sharma, musician Shekharjyoti Goswami, singer Amritprava Mahanta, and North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta — have been arrested and remain in custody.
