A day after Hyundai Motor announced the wage settlement with its recognised union, about 60 members of the Hyundai Motor India Employees Union (HMIEU) staged a protest at the bus parking zone inside the company’s Sriperumbudur plant, alleging that they were not consulted during the wage negotiations.

The protest was staged on Thursday morning. Some workers joined the protest after their night shift. Police soon arrived and dispersed the crowd, after which the protesters left the spot, said sources. Production at the plant remained unaffected.

In a Facebook post, HMIEU alleged that out of the 15,000 workers in the Hyundai factory, 12,000 workers earned an average of only ₹20,000, and only a small wage hike was given to a section of them.

On Wednesday, Hyundai Motor India Limited and United Union of Hyundai Employees, the recognised union of the company, said that they had signed a mutually beneficial wage agreement for the period 2024-2027. The package includes a salary increase of ₹31,000 per month.
