Vizianagaram ISIS case: NIA busts terror recruitment network, searches 16 locations across 8 states

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday carried out coordinated searches across eight states in connection with the Vizianagaram ISIS case, which involves a conspiracy to carry out terror attacks in India using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Searches were conducted at 16 locations in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, and Delhi, in close coordination with the Andhra Pradesh police. Officials said several digital devices, documents, cash and other incriminating materials were seized.

The case, registered by Vizianagaram police in July 2025, came to light after the arrest of accused Siraj-ur-Rahman, who was found with chemical substances suspected to be used for fabricating IEDs. His interrogation led to the arrest of co-accused Syed Sameer, with investigators later finding that the duo were radicalising youth and recruiting them through Instagram, Facebook, Telegram, Signal, and other platforms.

On August 27, NIA arrested another key accused, Arif Husain alias Abu Talib, while he was attempting to flee to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Investigations revealed that Husain had allegedly conspired with others to arrange the supply of weapons through the Nepal border.

Officials said the latest searches are part of efforts to dismantle the network and prevent further radicalisation and recruitment drives. The case is being probed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Explosive Substances Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
