Tamil Nadu Chief Minister S. Joseph Vijay has issued an order allowing all theatres across the state to screen five shows a day for the first seven days from the release of new Tamil films.
According to an official statement, representatives of the film industry recently met the Chief Minister and requested permission for theatres across Tamil Nadu to screen five shows a day for all films.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister’s Office said that film industry representatives met Chief Minister S. Joseph Vijay on May 16, 2026, and submitted various requests. One of their key demands was permission for all theatres in Tamil Nadu to screen five shows per day.
Under Rule 14-A of the ‘C’ Form licence conditions prescribed in the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, theatres in the state are currently permitted to screen four shows a day.
In addition, one special extra show is allowed on local festival days and public holidays with permission from the licensing authority or District Collector in the districts, and from the Commissioner of Police in Chennai city.
Following the meeting, Chief Minister Vijay approved amendments to the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, allowing theatres to screen five shows a day for seven days from the release date of newly released Tamil films.
The statement said all theatres in Tamil Nadu will now be permitted to screen five shows per day for the first seven days of a new Tamil film’s release. Theatres will also be allowed to screen five shows a day on local festival days, public holidays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The Chief Minister has also ordered that theatres will no longer need separate permission from the government or licensing authorities to screen five shows during the first seven days of a new film’s release, or on festival days, public holidays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Earlier, Vijay had also congratulated the team of Suriya and Trisha Krishnan-starrer Karuppu after the film’s strong performance at the box office. The film was released in theatres on May 15.
