UJVNL to explore geothermal energy in Chamoli; proposal approved at corporation’s board meeting

The Board of Directors of UJVNL Limited approved a proposal to explore geothermal energy potential in the Tapovan area of the border district of Chamoli. This step is considered significant in the search for new sources of energy.

Key decisions were taken on various projects and proposals at the corporation’s meeting

The Tapovan area of Chamoli has long been considered a potential area for Himalayan geothermal resources. Preliminary studies were conducted in this area in 2010 and 2015, but due to technical and financial challenges, the projects could not be pursued. Now, with the initiative of the state government and central support, an expert team will conduct detailed surveys, temperature mapping, geological testing, and technical evaluation.

The Uttarakhand government has stated that this project will be implemented in accordance with green energy and sustainable development guidelines. The government plans to ensure that the geothermal energy project not only meets local energy needs but also contributes to environmental protection and employment generation. Experts believe that the successful development of geothermal energy in the Tapovan region will expand energy options in the state.

The meeting approved various works for the 76 MW turbine of the Dharasu Power Station and the purchase of additional equipment. The Board of Directors also approved the annual accounts for the financial year 2024.

The Board of Directors also approved the revised proposal for the estimated cost of various civil, hydro-mechanical, and electro-mechanical works of the Corporation’s 72 MW Tyuni-Plasu Hydroelectric Project.
