Guwahati: Three groups working on the rehabilitation of surrendered militants, AC, JARC, and DRMC, have accused the Tripura government of ignoring long-standing welfare commitments.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday at the Agartala Press Club, the leaders warned that their protests could escalate if their demands are not addressed promptly.
They recalled blocking the Assam-Agartala National Highway on December 22, 2025, to press for their grievances.
The agitation was called off after the Jirania Sub-Divisional Magistrate, on behalf of the Tribal Welfare Minister, promised a meeting the next day.
However, when a five-member delegation arrived at the minister’s office on December 23, they were informed by the Tribal Welfare Director that Minister Bikash Debbarma had left for an urgent engagement in Chawmanu.
The groups described this as a breach of trust, stating, “He gave his word but did not honor it. We did not expect such disregard.”
The leaders have set a deadline of January 26, 2026, warning that failure to meet them by then will trigger a larger protest.
Their key demands include the release of the remaining Rs 23 crore from the Rs 45 crore rehabilitation package announced in 2007 by the Left Front government, the restoration of fencing support under the Chief Minister’s Rubber Mission to Rs 16,800 per year instead of the reduced Rs 6,000, and the withdrawal of pending legal cases against surrendered militants.
The approaching deadline has intensified pressure on authorities to address demands and avoid potential unrest.
