Tripura’s Infant Mortality Rate half of national average: CM

Reported by Mrinal Banik

Agartala: Tripura has recorded an Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) of 12 in 2024 against the national average of 24, Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Wednesday, citing the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) Bulletin released by the Registrar General of India.

In a post on social media, the Chief Minister said the state has registered a steady decline in IMR over the last three years.

According to the figures shared by Saha, Tripura’s IMR declined from 17 in 2022 to 15 in 2023 and further to 12 in 2024. The corresponding national IMR figures were 26 in 2022, 25 in 2023, and 24 in 2024.

The Chief Minister attributed the improvement to measures undertaken in maternal and child healthcare services across the state.

“Sustained improvements in maternal and child health services, institutional deliveries, SNCU/NBSU strengthening, immunisation coverage, and community-based health interventions have contributed to this achievement,” he said.

Special Newborn Care Units (SNCU) and Newborn Stabilisation Units (NBSU) are part of the healthcare system aimed at improving neonatal care and reducing infant deaths.

Saha also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda for supporting healthcare initiatives in the state.

Tripura has been focusing on expanding institutional delivery services, immunisation drives, and strengthening healthcare infrastructure in recent years as part of efforts to improve maternal and child health indicators.
