Tripura, Uttarakhand Governments hand over compensation to Angel Chakma’s Family

Agartala: A Tripura government delegation on Tuesday visited the family of slain MBA student Angel Chakma and handed over the financial assistance announced by the Tripura and Uttarakhand governments, officials said.

The delegation included Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy and Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma, along with senior Unakoti district officials. They met Angel’s parents, conveyed condolences, and assured full support on behalf of the state government.

Angel Chakma, a final-year MBA student in Uttarakhand, allegedly being stabbed to death in what is being described as a hate crime. Reportedly, attacked after resisting racial slurs directed at him and his brother Michael Chakma.

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha told reporters that financial assistance can never compensate for the loss of a young life. “Money cannot heal the pain of losing a son. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved family,” he said.

He added that he immediately spoke to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami after learning about the incident. Also announced assistance for the family. “As a government, we always try to stand strongly beside people in distress,” Saha said.

Calling the incident extremely shocking, the Chief Minister said he was “falling short of words” to describe the brutality. “This is one of the worst crimes. I pray for the departed soul. The Uttarakhand Chief Minister assured me that the strictest action will follow,” he said.

Saha further informed that the police have already arrested five accused persons, while another accused remains absconding.

After meeting the family, Minister Tinku Roy said the Tripura government has sanctioned ?5 lakh, while the Uttarakhand government has provided ?4.12 lakh as assistance.

“Words are not enough to console this grief. The Chief Minister sent us to assure the family that Tripura stands firmly with them until justice is delivered,” Roy said.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage across Tripura and the Northeast. People are demanding a speedy investigation and strict punishment for the culprits.
