Agartala: The Tripura Chakma Students Association (TCSA) on Sunday appealed to the central government to intervene following repeated attacks on students and youth from the Northeast across the country.
During a press briefing in Agartala, the association highlighted the case of Angel Chakma, a Tripura student who was brutally attacked in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha spoke to his Uttarakhand counterpart, Pushkar Singh Dhami, regarding the fatal assault. Saha said Dhami assured him of a thorough investigation and justice for the deceased.
He is expected to visit the family of Angel Chakma near Agartala on Monday.
Top officials from the Tripura Police have also coordinated with Uttarakhand authorities concerning the case, which has sparked protests in the state.
Six individuals were reportedly implicated in the attack, with five already in custody.
Leaders of the Chakma Students Association expressed serious concern over the safety of Northeastern students living elsewhere in India.
They called on the government to implement strong measures to prevent violence and harassment and demanded strict laws to address hate crimes and derogatory remarks targeting people from the Northeast.
The association warned that such incidents could lead to severe repercussions. They announced plans for a candlelight march in Agartala on Monday in memory of Angel Chakma and said they would submit a memorandum to Chief Minister Saha on Tuesday seeking strict punishment for the perpetrators and financial compensation for the family from both Tripura and Uttarakhand governments.
Pradyot Kishore Manikya, founder of Tipra Motha, condemned the killing and said his party will continue to seek justice for Angel Chakma.
