Guwahati: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Thursday that the state has entered into an agreement with the Guwahati Neurological Research Centre (GNRC) to establish a superspecialty hospital at Hapania in West Tripura district.
According to Saha, the hospital will be built on vacant land owned by Tripura Jute Mills Ltd. He added that officials from the state’s health department had already visited GNRC in Guwahati to evaluate its infrastructure and medical facilities.
The Chief Minister, who also oversees the health department, did not provide additional details about the memorandum with GNRC. He said the state government is also working to improve healthcare services and staff availability at the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital (GBP Hospital) and the Agartala Government Medical College.
Saha noted that the state had earlier signed an agreement with AIIMS, New Delhi, to enhance services at GBP Hospital. Following AIIMS recommendations, the number of ICU beds at the hospital is being increased from 156 to 326.
Additionally, GBP Hospital has been connected with AIIMS through telemedicine, allowing patients in Tripura to access advanced care remotely.
A 16-bed ICU for critical respiratory patients and a modern trauma centre ICU became operational at GBP Hospital on Thursday. Saha also revealed that the state Cabinet has discussed plans to establish a medical university to oversee medical colleges and other healthcare institutions in Tripura.
The Chief Minister said the government is improving healthcare within the state to reduce the need for patients to seek treatment outside Tripura. The state now has three medical colleges, providing 450 MBBS seats and 119 postgraduate courses in total.
In a previous effort, the government collaborated with Srija Hospitals and Research Institute, Imphal, to set up a superspecialty hospital and medical college at RK Nagar in West Tripura.
