Agartala: Tripura Police has constituted a multi-member investigation team headed by the Superintendent of Police (West) to probe the unnatural death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, even as forensic examination of the senior officer’s electronic devices has begun, officials said on Friday.

Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer, was found hanging in the washroom attached to his chamber at the state police headquarters here on July 20.

An unnatural death case was subsequently registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

According to an order issued by the Police Headquarters, the investigation will be led by the SP (West), with Additional Superintendent of Police (Urban) Dhruba Nath and Sub-Inspector Subhojit Deb, the investigating officer, assisting in the probe.

The order authorises the SP to induct officers from the Tripura Police Crime Branch or any other police unit, if required, and seek technical assistance from the Cyber Crime Unit during the investigation.

It also directs the investigating team to submit weekly progress reports to the Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) for onward submission to the Director General of Police.

Meanwhile, police have seized Dhankar’s mobile phone, laptop and personal computer for forensic examination as part of the investigation, officials said.

The electronic devices will be examined to ascertain whether they contain any material relevant to the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death, they said.

Sources said the future course of the investigation would depend on the outcome of the forensic analysis and other evidence collected during the probe.

Dhankar was taken to a government hospital after he was found unconscious in his office, where doctors declared him dead.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha had earlier said the investigation would be conducted strictly in accordance with the law after the preliminary post-mortem examination indicated death due to hanging.
