Tripura plans GI tags for scented lemon, sticky rice after pineapple: BJP chief

Agartala: BJP Tripura Pradesh President Rajib Bhattacharjee on Thursday highlighted a series of initiatives undertaken by the BJP-led government for the development of tribal areas, women empowerment, and transparent governance.

He said that pineapple, grown extensively in Tripura’s tribal belts, has already received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, along with traditional tribal attire, Risha and Rignai.

“Efforts are underway to secure GI tagging for Tripura’s scented lemon and sticky rice as well, so that these indigenous products can be branded as Tripura-grown and gain global recognition,” Bhattacharjee added.

He stated that 9,326 tribal beneficiaries have been provided financial assistance of Rs 25,000 each, amounting to a total expenditure of Rs 23 crore under the TRESP project.

“To strengthen child welfare infrastructure in tribal areas, 226 Anganwadi centres have been sanctioned, of which 141 are already operational, while the remaining centres will be launched by next March,” he said.

He further informed reporters that out of 44,865 families identified in tribal areas, around 38,000 have already been covered under the piped drinking water scheme.

“Steps have also been taken to improve digital connectivity, with 10 new mobile towers being installed in tribal areas. For the overall development of tribal areas, an allocation of Rs 3,000 crore has been made,” he added.

Referring to national recognition, Bhattacharjee said that between 2019 and 2024, seven noted personalities from tribal societies received civilian honours from the Government of India.

He also mentioned that the honorarium for tribal chieftains has been increased from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000 as a mark of respect for their role in society.

On legislative measures, Rajib Bhattacharjee said that eight new Bills were introduced during the winter session of Parliament, and the GRAMG Bill has already been passed. He claimed that transparency has been ensured and politicisation of MGNREGA has been stopped.

Under the new framework, GRAMG mandates that only public assets should be created. He alleged that during the CPIM rule, ponds exceeding 15,000 square feet were dug and irregularities in such works were highlighted in the CAG report.

Highlighting women empowerment, he said a series of schemes have been launched, including Drone Didi and Lakhpati Didi initiatives.

Financial support in the form of a Rs 50,000 cash bond is being provided for newborn daughters, along with prizes for meritorious students.

He added that 45 women have already received driving training, and women are being encouraged to enter the driving sector, while 50 women have been trained in cooking skills.

Bhattacharjee also asserted that a transparent recruitment policy has been introduced under the BJP regime. “Not a single job provided during the BJP government’s tenure has been challenged in court, which reflects fairness and transparency in the recruitment process,” he added.
