Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday said the state has emerged as a frontrunner in good governance and is steadily positioning itself as a policy model for the Northeastern region, through sustained administrative reforms and institutional strengthening.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Good Governance Day programme at Pragna Bhavan, Saha said Tripura has been recognised as the country’s seventh “front-runner state” in governance and has received 347 national and regional awards over the past eight years due to consistent reform-oriented governance practices.
He added that the state government has placed good governance at the centre of its development strategy, noting that governance is a process of building trust between the state and citizens through effective decision-making, institutional functioning, and delivery of outcomes.
Saha noted that administrative reforms in Tripura are institution-driven rather than personality-driven.
Referring to structural reforms, the chief minister said the Good Governance Department was established in August 2023, followed by the launch of the Tripura Institution for Transformation (TIFT) in December 2023 under the guidance of NITI Aayog.
He added that TIFT has been recognised by NITI Aayog as one of seven leading state-level institutions in the country and plays a key role in policy formulation, project monitoring, and evaluation.
Saha said the state has introduced record management and asset management policies and is working closely with knowledge institutions to develop sectoral roadmaps.
He added that innovation-driven initiatives, including startup policy design workshops in collaboration with IIM Calcutta, have been undertaken to address challenges related to finance, incubation, and market access.
He also said a district-level good governance index has been developed to assess administrative performance across key sectors, including health, education, infrastructure, social welfare, and citizen-centric services, to promote healthy competition among districts.
Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha said Tripura’s governance initiatives have received appreciation from the central government, while Director General of Police Anurag noted improvements in law and order.
Good Governance Secretary Kiran Gitte outlined ongoing and future programmes of the department and TIFT. Senior officials and district administrators were present at the event, where a TIFT newsletter and report card were also released.
