Tripura ADC polls record 83% turnout; re-poll ordered at Sepahijala booth

Agartala: Elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) concluded on Sunday with a high voter turnout of around 83 per cent, even as a few sporadic incidents were reported from parts of the state.

Polling, which began at 7 am, ended at 5 pm, with officials describing the overall process as largely peaceful. Secretary of the Tripura State Election Commission, Anurag Sen, said the final turnout figure could rise further after compilation of reports from all polling stations.

“The polling process concluded at 5 pm with a turnout of about 83 per cent. While some minor issues and isolated incidents were reported, these were promptly handled by the police. There have been no reports of major violence, and the overall situation remains peaceful,” Sen said.

He added that there were no instances of EVM malfunctioning during the actual polling process. “Some issues were detected during the morning mock polls, and those machines were immediately replaced. No such problems were reported during voting hours,” he noted.

The State Election Commission has, however, ordered a re-poll at polling station 17/39 under the Pekurjala-Janmejoynagar constituency in Sepahijala district following complaints of tampering with a ballot unit. The re-poll is scheduled to be held on April 16.

Meanwhile, police sources confirmed a few minor law and order incidents during the day. In Boxanagar area of Sepahijala district, miscreants allegedly hurled crude bombs, prompting security personnel to fire blank rounds to disperse the crowd. The situation was later brought under control.

Incidents of minor violence were also reported from other areas, including the vandalism of a vehicle belonging to a BJP candidate. Police sources said one person was injured in the incident and later succumbed to injuries.

Despite these isolated disturbances, authorities maintained that polling across TTAADC areas was conducted peacefully, with robust voter participation marking the exercise.
