The ruling Trinamool Congress on Friday (February 27, 2026) announced four candidates, including former Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar, for the upcoming elections to the Rajya Sabha.
The other nominees are State Minister Babul Supriyo, Supreme Court lawyer Menaka Guruswamy, and actor Koel Mallick.
“We extend our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to them. May they continue to uphold Trinamool’s enduring legacy of resilience and its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of every Indian” the Trinamool Congress posted on social media.
The most important inclusion in the list was Rajeev Kumar who served as the Director General of Police, West Bengal, till January 2026. Mr. Kumar is perceived to be close to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee even though he was issued a show-cause notice after violence erupted at an event attended by football icon Lionel Messi at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata in December 2025.
Babul Supriyo, a two-time BJP MP from Asansol, joined the Trinamool Congress in 2021 and was elected to West Bengal Assembly.
Ms. Guruswamy has represented the West Bengal government in various cases, including the rape and murder of a doctor at the RG Kar Hospital in August 2024, while Ms. Mullick is a prominent name in Bengali television industry.
