Three old localities of city to be developed as ‘Heritage Mohallas’ | Prayagraj News

Prayagraj: Old localities of Prayagraj like Daraganj, Loknath and Malviya Nagar would be developed as ‘Heritage Mohallas’, giving an impetus to the city’s cultural tourism while preserving their deep historical roots. The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) has expedited preparations for the project, with the tendering process expected to be completed by the end of this month and a total estimated investment of Rs 15 crore earmarked for the development. These 3 neighbourhoods are among the oldest quarters of the city, known not only for their religious significance but also for their connections to literature, freedom movement icons and community life. Daraganj, situated on the banks of the Ganga near the Triveni Sangam, is believed to be one of the oldest settlements in Prayagraj and has long been associated with temples like the ancient Nagvasuki Temple, where devotees worship the serpent deity along the riverfront. The maze of narrow lanes here also preserves reminders of pre-Mughal and Mughal heritage, with historic structures and temples dating back several centuries. Loknath Mohalla, a bustling old-city neighbourhood, has its own legacy as a centre of traditional markets, eateries and residences that preserved community life for generations. Malviya Nagar, similarly historic, has been part of the city’s cultural fabric, reflecting its religious and literary traditions. Under the plan, streets and lanes will be restored to reflect their historical character, ancient buildings (some are 300-400 years old) will be developed as tourist sites, and statues of freedom fighters and noted littérateurs will be installed to honour local history. The project also aims to enhance amenities with public Wi-Fi, attractive street lighting, food courts and sanitation improvements to create a vibrant environment that appeals to both residents and visitors. These localities are alive with a dialect that speaks of an older, slower era, and houses that still reflect the timeless way of life of the city’s original residents. A visit to these mohallas feels like stepping back in time. In Loknath, one can still experience the old-world charm through the distinct food, the dialect, and the way people go about their daily lives in true Allahabadi fashion. Similarly, Malviya Nagar, named after the revered freedom fighter and educationist Bharat Ratna Madan Mohan Malaviya, reflects a bygone intellectual spirit. Daraganj, located near the Sangam, continues to retain its traditional aura, where modern times seem to have made little impact on the way of life of its residents. Dinesh Chandra Sachan, PMC chief engineer, said: “The project will not only preserve the city’s traditions but also transform the three localities into key cultural tourism destinations in the coming years.”
