Imphal: Tensions between Naga and Kuki communities in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district have increased over the construction of the Koutruk-Konsakhul road. The dispute comes amid a regional conflict that has claimed around 70 lives since February.
The Joint Tribe Students’ Association (JTSA), which represents the Inpui, Liangmai, Rongmei and Zeme Naga tribes, has urged the state government to speed up construction of the road to ensure uninterrupted connectivity to Konsakhul village.
However, the Kuki Inpi South West Sadar Hills (KI-SWSH) has opposed the project and demanded an immediate halt to construction. The organisation claims that the road encroaches on land under its customary jurisdiction.
According to the JTSA, the alternative route is essential for Konsakhul residents because the traditional route through Lailon Vaiphei and Leimakhong became unsafe after an abduction incident on May 13 that resulted in six Naga casualties.
The JTSA said villagers are facing difficulties accessing healthcare, education and trade in the state capital. It also said the proposed road bypasses all Kuki settlements and should not be seen as a threat or provocation against any community.
Meanwhile, the KI-SWSH has warned of widespread protests across the region if construction continues.
In a statement issued through its information department, the organisation said infrastructure projects should not proceed without addressing local territorial concerns. It warned that the dispute could lead to further ethnic violence.
In response, the JTSA has urged the state government to provide immediate security for construction workers, machinery and equipment. It has also asked the district administration and security forces to act against unlawful obstructions.
The association has called on the government to hold peaceful talks with all stakeholders to resolve the dispute while ensuring that residents can access essential services.
