BJP Legislature Party leader Suvendu Adhikari took oath as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday (May 9, 2026), heading the first BJP Government in the State.

Governor R.N. Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr. Adhikari at a grand ceremony held at the Brigade Parade Grounds in Kolkata in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers, Chief Ministers of NDA-ruled States and senior BJP leaders.
BJP legislators Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Nisith Pramanik and Kshudiram Tudu were also sworn in as State Ministers.
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Saturday (May 9, 2026) congratulated his West Bengal counterpart Suvendu Adhikari and his cabinet colleagues, expressing confidence that the BJP government would usher in a new era of development and good governance in the State.
“A development-oriented BJP government has been formed in West Bengal. I extend heartiest congratulations to the newly sworn-in ministers and am confident that under the leadership of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari Ji and guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, this government will script a golden chapter of good governance, security, prosperity, and public welfare in the state,” Mr. Choudhary wrote in his X post.
The BJP secured 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, ending the Trinamool Congress’ 15-year rule in the State.
CM Suvendu reviews law and order, welfare schemes after taking oath
After taking the oath of office, CM Suvendu Adhikari held a meeting with Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariala, Director General of Police Siddh Nath Gupta, and other police and civil officials to review the law and order situation in the State.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand was also present at the meeting, sources said.
Mr. Adhikari also enquired about the operations of various schemes introduced by the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government and directed the chief secretary to ensure that the schemes continue to function smoothly without disruption, the sources added.
He also enquired about the progress of the renovation work being carried out at the Writers’ Buildings, which will be the next State secretariat.
