Barpeta: Panic gripped the Rahampur area of Chenga in Assam’s Barpeta district on Tuesday after a passenger boat capsized in the Brahmaputra River. At least seven passengers are feared missing.
The incident has once again drawn attention to recurring safety lapses and regulatory failures in Assam’s river transport system.
According to preliminary reports, the boat overturned suddenly while ferrying passengers across the river. Rescue teams rushed to the spot immediately. However, several passengers remain untraceable, triggering anxiety and distress along the riverbanks.
Sources alleged that the boat operator ignored basic safety norms. Passengers reportedly did not receive life jackets. Strong river currents may have further contributed to the mishap, raising serious questions about negligence and compliance with safety regulations.
In the aftermath, emotional scenes unfolded at nearby ghats. Families and local residents gathered in large numbers, anxiously awaiting information about their missing relatives. The situation remained tense as search operations continued.
Notably, authorities have repeatedly flagged concerns over overcrowding, unsafe practices, and rule violations by boat operators on the Brahmaputra. Despite frequent warnings, enforcement has remained weak, allowing risky river travel to persist.
The incident once again highlights the vulnerability of passengers who rely on river transport for daily commuting, especially in riverine areas.
Meanwhile, rescue teams, assisted by local fishermen, are carrying out extensive search operations in the river. Officials said they have not yet received any confirmed information on the missing passengers.
