Tezpur: The 55-day-long student uprising at Tezpur University reached a turning point on Friday as two senior officials — the Dean of the School of Engineering (SoE), Prof. Shankar Chandra Deka, and the Deputy Director of the Training and Placement (T&P) Cell, Dr. Pijush Chandra Das — stepped down amid mounting allegations of negligence and mismanagement.
With the University administration yet to provide a concrete response to their demands, engineering students intensified their agitation by directly confronting Dr. Das and Prof. Deka over failures in academic support, infrastructure, and placement-related services.
Students alleged persistent negligence in training facilities, improper utilisation of funds meant for student development, and repeated lapses by the T&P Cell that have left many unprepared for critical career opportunities.
During the confrontation, Dr. Das distanced himself from decision-making responsibilities, pointing instead to Finance Officer Dr. Braja Bandhu Mishra and the absconding Vice Chancellor, Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, as the key authorities controlling funds and approvals.
His remarks further fuelled student concerns over what they describe as entrenched opacity and dysfunction within the University’s administrative structure.
Students also pressed Prof. Deka to respond to allegations of misconduct and prolonged inaction on academic grievances. Under growing pressure from the agitating students, Prof. Deka resigned as Dean of the School of Engineering. Shortly after, Dr. Das declared he would no longer continue in his role and asked to be relieved of all responsibilities.
The latest developments underscore the deep frustration among students, who insist their demands reflect a need for transparency and functional governance rather than rebellion. As the agitation enters its ninth week, students say they remain united in their call for meaningful institutional reform and accountability from those entrusted with overseeing their academic futures.
