Sai Krishna custodial death: SIT likely to interrogate suspended Krishnalanka CI from July 29

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged custodial death of Gade Sai Krishna (25) in NTR Police Commissionerate limits is likely to take accused Krishnalanka Circle Inspector (CI) S.S.V.V. Nagaraju into custody from Rajamahendravaram Central Prison for questioning on Wednesday (July 29).

The Supreme Court on Monday granted seven days of police custody to interrogate suspended Krishnalanka Circle Inspector, who is the main accused in the alleged Sai Krishna custodial death case.

The SIT, headed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) M. Ravi Prakash, had arrested Nagaraju and four constables on charges of wrongful confinement, torture, custodial death and destroying evidences in the case.

Meanwhile, Sai Krishna’s mother, Gade Vijaya Lakshmi, alleged that her son was illegally detained at Krishnalanka police station in May this year, tortured severely, and beaten to death. Later, police cremated the body and destroyed the evidence, she alleged.

The SIT officers filed a petition at a court in Vijayawada seeking custody of the accused to trace the victim’s body, identify the other suspects, and recover the material evidence, including the missing CCTV footages and other scientific evidences in the case.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court said that the investigating officer was at liberty to interrogate the accused at the designated interrogation centre of SIT or any other facility available to the police in Vijayawada.

The apex court also said that the accused has the right to have his advocate present during the questioning and that the advocate shall be allowed to remain within the interrogation site, where he can see the accused. However, the advocate shall not intervene in the investigation process, the apex court added.

SIT police are likely to take the accused to Krishnalanka police station and other different locations in Vijayawada during the seven-day custody period to collect evidences in the case.
