As part of customary traditions, Government of India invites the leaders of one country for the day that saw the adoption of India’s constitution. Marking a different shift, the government had also invited the leaders of the 10-nation ASEAN in 2018.
Republic Day’s significance
This day marks the adoption of the Constitution of India which came into effect on 26 January 1950. The constitution superseded the Government of India Act 1935. And, transformed India into a republic, following its independence from the British Raj in 1947. The Constituent Assembly of India on 26 November 1949 adopted the constitution. The particular day was chosen because Indian National Congress had proclaimed Purna Swaraj (complete independence) on that date in 1930.
