People in the plains of Uttarakhand are likely to get relief today from the severe heat that has persisted for several days; however, this relief may also bring weather-related challenges. The Meteorological Department has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for eight districts of the state—including Dehradun and Tehri—warning of heavy rain, hailstorms, lightning, and squalls.
According to the Meteorological Centre, the weather in the state could change abruptly due to an active Western Disturbance. Spells of heavy rain, accompanied by light to moderate showers, are expected at several locations across the districts of Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Haridwar, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Champawat, and Pithoragarh. Additionally, gusty winds blowing at speeds of 50 to 60 km/h and isolated hailstorms are likely.
In recent days, temperatures in the plains had risen significantly above normal levels. The Meteorological Department forecasts a drop of two to four degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures over the next two to three days, bringing relief from the heat.
Meanwhile, thunderstorms and rain are also predicted for mountainous districts such as Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, Almora, and Pithoragarh. Snowfall is also possible in areas situated at altitudes above 4,200 meters.
The Meteorological Department has urged people to stay away from open areas, trees, and electricity poles during inclement weather and to avoid unnecessary travel. According to the department, similar weather conditions are likely to persist in several parts of the state on Friday as well.
