From Mussoorie, the queen of the mountains, to the Doon Valley, nature wreaked havoc this September that has had a profound impact on life and property. Continuous torrential rains in Dehradun district on Monday night made the situation dire.
Cloudbursts and heavy rainfall in the Sahasradhara, Karligad, Maldevta, and Rishikesh areas have inflicted deep wounds on Doon. This is the first time Doon has seen so much rainfall in September. The widespread devastation is unprecedented.
September is experiencing heavy rainfall after August. According to the Meteorological Department, as of 8:30 am on September 16th, the state has recorded 468 percent more rainfall in 24 hours, with Dehradun district receiving the most rainfall. Furthermore, Dehradun has received the highest rainfall in the state so far in September.
The Sahasradhara region recorded 264 mm of rainfall in just four hours, which is nearly 2500 percent more than normal. This is the highest rainfall ever recorded in a single day in September. The previous record was 212 mm in 1924, which was broken this time.
There has been a significant variation in rainfall in the state. In July, the state received 350.2 mm of rain, which was less than the normal rainfall of 417.8 mm. Last year, the same month saw a rainfall of 481.9 mm, which was above normal. The month of August saw heavy rainfall, with 574.4 mm of rain this month, which was 188.7 percent more than normal. September has also received excess rainfall.
Dehradun also received above-normal rainfall this summer. However, the monsoon has shattered all predictions. Since June 1st, 1906 mm of rainfall has been recorded, compared to the normal 1378 mm. That’s 38 percent more. The average rainfall in September was 385 mm, which is 151 percent more than the normal 153 mm.
