As heavy rain and thunderstorms continued to batter several parts of West Bengal on Wednesday (September 2), a toy train car shed in the Darjeeling area crashed due to the heavy rains and injured multiple railway workers in the area. Various parts of Kolkata and adjoining areas remained waterlogged for the second day in a row after two days of continuous heavy rains.
The accident in Darjeeling has left at least eight workers injured, but there were no casualties in the incident. The injured were given treatment at a nearby hospital and the debris were removed from the road to ensure smooth passage of traffic.
Officials said that the accident happened due to heavy rains and gusty winds in the area.
The incessant rains for the last few days also triggered a landslide in the Andal area in Paschim Bardhaman district. These areas have many abandoned and closed mines, which have led to this landslide, locals said. This is a recurring problem and a cause of anxiety for the people residing in these areas.
In the Asansol region’s Baraboni area also a village road submerged due to the heavy rains.
Meanwhile, the Durgapur and Maithon, and Panchet barrage are also releasing water due to the heavy downpour leading to a fear of flooding in the south Bengal region.
The Damodar Valley Corporation released 99800 cusec water on September 2 due to rising water levels in the Damodar River after constant rain in Jharkhand.
In Kolkata, cardinal areas like Park Circus, Ballygunge, Central Avenue, Behala, and multiple other places were waterlogged, slowing down traffic and causing major hassle for daily commuters. This the second day in a row that such waterlogging has caused traffic snarls in the city and its adjoining areas.
In Bankura district, a bridge was submerged by overflowing water which led to a complete shutdown of connectivity among people. The Bhadul Bridge over the Dwarakeswar River was submerged and cut off connections with at least 20 villages in the area, leaving many people stranded.
The India Meteriological Department has also predicted that there will be more rain in the next two days, but the intensity will decease as the low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal has started to move towards Madhya Pradesh.
Birbhum district’s Sriniketan recorded the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours at 263 mm, followed by 214mm in Paschim Bardhaman’s Burnpur, and Kolkata’s Alipur at 127mm.
