Honesty, integrity, originality and ethical conduct are the cornerstones of quality research and the foundation of a successful academic career, Vice-Chancellor of Central University of Karnataka (CUK) Professor Battu Sathyanarayana said on July 22.

He inaugurated a workshop on Research and Publication Ethics (RPE) organised by the Central Library for newly admitted research scholars at the university’s Central Library Seminar Hall.

Prof. Sathyanarayana urged research scholars to choose meaningful research topics, avoid plagiarism, deposit their theses in Shodhganga, publish in reputed journals, and uphold the highest standards of academic integrity. He emphasised the need to strengthen communication and language skills, saying effective writing and presentation enhanced the quality and impact of research.

Highlighting the One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) initiative of the Union Ministry of Education, he said it provided access to more than 13,000 national and international journals from over 30 leading publishers. He informed participants that the Central Library offers digital resources, wi-fi, a previous years’ question paper bank, Turnitin plagiarism detection software, grammar enhancement tools, and other academic support services.

He announced that a 100-seat learning space for research scholars equipped with modern facilities would be inaugurated in August.

Controller of Examinations (In-charge) Prof. Bharath Kumar, the guest of honour, stressed the importance of research methodology, coursework, and publication ethics in shaping a successful Ph.D. career. He said pursuing doctoral research requires commitment, discipline and hard work, and described the selection of an appropriate research topic as the foundation of quality research.

Welcoming the participants, university librarian and RPE course co-ordinator P.S. Kattimani said the programme had been designed to familiarise new research scholars with research methodology, research philosophy, topic selection, publication ethics, plagiarism, and the effective use of research databases.

Technical sessions were conducted by Prof. Rajeev Shesha Joshi, Head of the Department of Physics, and N. Sandeep, Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, who spoke on research methodology, database searching, research topic selection, and the use of emerging technologies in research.

Research scholars from various departments attended the workshop.
