Fresh protests broke out in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Thursday evening as tensions flared over the formation of a new state government and the inclusion of Kuki leaders in the BJP-led administration.

The unrest erupted near Tuibong Bazaar, where demonstrators gathered to oppose the new government, alleging that their long-standing demand for a separate administration had not been fulfilled. Protesters also voiced anger over Kuki MLAs joining the government, particularly the appointment of Nemcha Kipgen as deputy chief minister.

According to police and local officials, protesters attempted to block roads by burning wood, tyres and other discarded materials, while raising slogans against Kipgen. They also pelted stones at security personnel deployed in the area. The situation escalated when security forces attempted to disperse the crowd. The mob, which outnumbered the personnel deployed, pelted stones, prompting a baton charge. Two people sustained minor injuries in the incident, they said. There was no immediate confirmation of significant damage to property, and authorities said the situation remained under close watch.

“The situation remains tense, and additional forces have been rushed to bring it under control,” a senior officer said.

Tensions have been simmering in the district since Wednesday evening after Kipgen, who hails from Kangpokpi, took oath as deputy chief minister.
