Protests demanding drinking water: BJP urges TVK-led govt. to act on war footing

BJP State president Nainar Nagenthran on Thursday urged the TVK-led government to take steps on war footing to ensure the supply of drinking water to people. He referred to a media report which highlighted the recurring protests in various parts of Tamil Nadu demanding uninterrupted supply of drinking water.

The media report pointed out protests demanding drinking water supply were staged between August 1 and 11 in various places, including in Tindivanam, Marakkanam, Manapparai, Uthandi on ECR, Kangeyam, Dharapuram-Udumalai road, Tiruvannamalai, Sankarapuram, Velankanni, Sanarpatti, Nagapattinam, Siluvaipatti, among others.

The ground water table has gone down, Mr. Nagenthran said and charged the failure on the part of the State government to undertake precautionary measures were the reason behind the hardships being faced by the people. Sinking borewells and supplying water through lorries, among other measures could be undertaken, he said.
