The prime accused in Kolkata’s Gulshan Colony shoot-out was arrested from Delhi on Sunday (September 21, 2025) night. Mini Firoz is a local strongman in eastern Kolkata, who has been absconding for the past 10 days, since violence shook the residential area near the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass on September 11.

Mini Firoz or Mohammad Firoz was booked under Sections 109/3(5)/324(2)/351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Sections 25/27 of the Arms Act, and Section 9 of the West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order Act, officials of the Kolkata Police said on Sunday night.

A team of the Kolkata Police went to Delhi after they received a credible tip-off on Mr. Firoz’s location, and picked him from his hideout in the national capital, the officials said. “He is being brought on transit remand to Kolkata,” they added.

Four other accused in the same case are already in police custody. Mohammad Amber, also known as Mohammad Nafis; Md. Sajid; Ahmed Hossain alias Md. Madhu; and Raja Khan have also been arrested in the same case. They were all residents of the area. Md. Sajid is said to be a close aide of Mr. Firoz. The police also seized multiple weapons from the accused.

Mr. Firoz was posting video messages on his social media page even though he had been absconding for the past 10 days. In the videos, he is seen issuing threats. The accused was not using his mobile SIM card, thus police could not track his location during this time.

“You have only seen my calm side. I hope you do not have to see my angry side. Do not instigate me,” Mr. Firoz threatens in one of the several videos he posted online.

Later, on Monday, he was produced at the Alipore District and Session Court here.

“Police should be awarded for taking such a long time to arrest the criminal. He was making live videos but they still could not arrest him,” Sukanta Majumdar, former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) West Bengal State president said.

On September 11, Mr. Firoz and his gang members were seen vandalising bikes, assaulting shop owners, and hurling crude country-made bombs, according to CCTV footage recovered by the police.

The mayhem appears to have begun in order to establish Mr. Firoz’s dominance in the area, and continued in multiple rounds for over five hours, creating huge ruckus and panic in the residential area. The main cause of the violence appeared to have been rivalry between two syndicates.

Locals have alleged that Mr. Firoz and his gang were attacking the supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor from Kasba, Sushanta Ghosh.

In November 2024, Mr. Ghosh survived a murder attempt just outside his home in Kasba. Multiple arrests were made in relation to that crime.

Gun violence

On Monday (September 22) morning, a young man was killed in Kolkata’s Garden Reach area after he sustained bullet injuries. A firearm was recovered from the area where Shresth Dhurka was found dead. The cause of death is being investigated.

In a related incident, a gym owner was shot inside his gym near the Tollygunge area on Sunday afternoon. Two rounds were fired in the air, the police said. No one was injured. It led to panic among patrons. The miscreants were wearing helmets, so it was harder to identify them, and the search for the suspects is still on, the police said.
