Praggnanandhaa became the first Indian to win the Norway Chess title

India’s young Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa has made history by winning the Norway Chess 2026 title. The 20-year-old has become the first Indian player to win this tournament.

He achieved this feat by defeating Germany’s Vincent Keymer in the final round. On the tournament’s last day, Praggnanandhaa was in third place with 15 points.

He secured 3 points by winning the classical match, bringing his total to 18 points and clinching the title.

Magnus Carlsen holds the record for the most Norway Chess tournament wins, having triumphed seven times; he was also the champion in 2025.

Tides turn in the final round; Wesley loses despite winning the tie-breaker

Heading into the final round, American Grandmaster Wesley So was leading with 15.5 points. However, his match ended in a draw, forcing a decision via an Armageddon tie-breaker.

This opened the door for Praggnanandhaa to win the title. Although Wesley So won the tie-breaker, he earned only 1.5 points, bringing his total to 17—one point shy of Praggnanandhaa’s tally.

France’s Alireza Firouzja finished third with 15.5 points. In the final round, Magnus Carlsen defeated Gukesh but failed to win the title; Carlsen finished fifth with 13 points.

Praggnanandhaa defeated World No. 1 Carlsen twice

Praggnanandhaa’s performance was modest in the early stages of the tournament, but he made a spectacular comeback in the later matches.

One of his greatest achievements was defeating World No. 1 and seven-time Norway Chess champion Magnus Carlsen twice in classical games. Praggnanandhaa became the second Indian player to defeat Magnus Carlsen twice in a single tournament. Prior to this, Viswanathan Anand had defeated Carlsen in two consecutive matches at the 2007 Linares International Tournament.

What is the Armageddon format of Norway Chess?

The Norway Chess tournament is one of the most prestigious and exciting annual chess tournaments in the world. This year, the tournament was held for the first time in Oslo, the capital of Norway, from May 25 to June 5, 2026.

Six players each participated in both the Open and Women’s categories, facing each other twice. If a classical match between two players ends in a draw, the outcome is decided by a sudden-death (Armageddon) game.

In this format, the player with the white pieces receives more time but is required to win; a draw results in the player with the black pieces being declared the winner and awarded the extra point. This ensures a decisive result in every round.
