Pradyot Debbarma urges indigenous unity for ‘Tiprasa Rule’ ahead of TTAADC polls

Agartala: Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma on Wednesday called for unity among indigenous communities ahead of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, scheduled for April.

Addressing a public meeting at Manu Chailengta, Debbarma stated that internal divisions among indigenous groups have historically weakened their collective political influence and hindered development in tribal regions.

He urged various communities to transcend ethnic differences to secure their rights and future prospects.

Citing the recent killing of Anjel Chakma, Debbarma noted that such incidents demonstrate how individuals from the Northeast are often targeted based on physical appearance, regardless of their specific ethnic identity. He stressed that these challenges necessitate greater solidarity among indigenous people.

The Tipra Motha leader alleged that despite the allocation of central funds, development in tribal-dominated districts like Dhalai remains insufficient.

He claimed that resources are not spent proportionately in ADC areas, with infrastructure and development largely concentrated in and around Agartala.

Debbarma further noted that while ADC regions contribute significantly to the state’s economy through gas reserves and rubber plantations, local populations do not receive commensurate benefits.

He stated that his movement seeks to address long-term issues such as education, livelihood, and the rights of economically weaker sections, rather than relying on short-term electoral incentives.

Appealing for an inclusive approach, he sought the cooperation of Bengalis, Chakmas, Jamatias, Debbarmas, and other communities to achieve what he described as Tiprasa rule.

While Tipra Motha and the BJP remain allies in the state government, they are expected to contest the upcoming TTAADC elections as rivals, marking a significant political contest in the state.
