Authorities in Lakhimpur district have taken seven individuals into custody after cattle remains were discovered near a Naamghar in Chiring Chuk village, raising concerns over attempts to disrupt communal peace in the region. The incident occurred in Dhakuakhana, located approximately 8 kilometres from the district headquarters.
The remains, reportedly a severed cattle head concealed in a sack, were found next to the Naamghar and have sparked concern among local residents. The seven people detained in connection with the case include Abu Kalam Ali and Jahidul Islam from Chukulibhoria; Sahar Ali, Dilwar Hussain, and Dildar Hussain from Deobeel Christian village; and Monsur Ali and Razak Ali from Debera Rangchali.
Residents expressed alarm over what they described as a deliberate provocation intended to stir unrest. Community members, including elders, have urged calm and advised against reacting to acts that could undermine the area’s long-standing inter-community relations. One elder stated, “This is an attempt to sow seeds of discord among communities who have lived together peacefully for generations.”
While investigations continue, the local community has appealed to the district administration and police to ensure a thorough inquiry and to hold those responsible accountable. According to locals, the incident may be part of a broader strategy by miscreants to create instability.
This is the first such incident reported from Upper Assam, though similar provocations have recently been reported in the western districts of Dhubri and Goalpara. In response, Assam’s Director General of Police Harmeet Singh convened a high-level review meeting in Dhubri on Tuesday to assess the situation.
The development comes days after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a night-time “shoot-at-sight” directive on 13 June following earlier incidents, including the discovery of cattle remains near a Hanuman temple, inflammatory posters, and night-time stone-pelting.
