Poet and writer Nilim Kumar has made strong remarks over the ongoing investigation into the death of singer Zubeen Garg, describing the accused in the case as “cultural terrorists.”
Kumar alleged that festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma were responsible for the singer’s death, though he added that the “actual leader behind the act” was still unknown. He also pointed to Mahanta’s connections, saying his close ties with influential political families, including those linked to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, should be noted.
“It is good to have faith in the justice system, but for ordinary people, hope of justice is often slim. Entire Assam hopes these cultural terrorists will not escape accountability,” Kumar said, expressing scepticism about the judicial process. He cited previous investigations, including a Special Investigation Team probe into Gaurav Gogoi’s case, which he argued did not result in action.
At the same time, Kumar reflected on Zubeen Garg’s personal qualities and cultural contributions, recalling that the late singer had even performed in his films. He described Garg’s simplicity and artistic legacy as central to Assamese identity.
