Prayagraj: In the hustle and bustle of the city, where Independence Day celebrations unfold every year at well-known landmarks, a living symbol of freedom has quietly stood forgotten for decades. Planted on Aug 15, 1947—the very day India became independent—the historic banyan tree, shaped to resemble the map of India, is awaiting a fresh lease of life after years of neglect.The tree, known as ‘Akshay Vat’, was planted in Prayagraj by freedom fighters, professors and students to commemorate the country’s independence. Their vision was symbolic: as the banyan spread its branches, so would India grow stronger, larger and more prosperous.While several events are organised every Independence Day at prominent places associated with the freedom movement, the historic tree and the area surrounding it have remained largely neglected. The site, despite its unique connection with the country’s Independence Day, failed to receive the attention and upkeep befitting its historical significance.Now, a group of volunteers has taken up the cause and approached Prayagraj mayor Ganesh Kesarwani for help in restoring the neglected site. Responding to the initiative, the mayor, accompanied by local representatives, visited the historic Akshay Vat site and launched a special cleanliness drive.During the visit, a broader plan for the conservation, strengthening and beautification of the premises was also announced. Representatives acknowledged that the historic site had faced neglect in the past, but assured that work to improve its surroundings would now be undertaken in a time-bound manner.For the volunteers, the effort is about more than cleaning up a forgotten corner of the city. The revival of the site could turn this forgotten symbol into a place where the city reconnects with its freedom struggle and the ideals of independent India.
