Independent MP from Purnea in northeast Bihar, Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, on Tuesday (February 10, 2026) was granted bail by the MP/MLA court in a 31-year-old forgery case under the Indian Penal Code. He, however, will remain in judicial custody in another case filed at another police station in the State capital, for which hearing will be held in court on Wednesday (February 11, 2026).

“Pappu Yadav has been granted bail in the 1995 case but he will remain in custody in another case which was filed by the police at the Buddha Colony police station for allegedly obstructing police work during his arrest,” Mr. Yadav’s lawyer Shivnandan Bharti said. Mr. Bharti added that the other case (no: 72/ 2026) at Buddha Colony police station would be heard in court tomorrow, February 11.

Mr. Bharti also alleged that the police “conspired” to file a case against Pappu Yadav accusing him of obstructing their work while “he [Mr. Yadav] himself had offered for arrest after seeing the warrant”. He further charged that officials had “misbehaved” with his client. “The court took the matter seriously and said that action will be taken against the officials concerned,” he added.

Mr. Yadav was arrested on Friday, February 7 midnight and first taken to the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) under judicial custody for medical tests. He was to be produced before the court on February 9 but the judicial work in the civil court of Patna was suspended on the day due to a “bomb threat”. He was later sent to Beur jail in Patna and from there produced before the court on February 10, when he was granted bail in the case. “The court had ordered to keep Mr. Yadav in PMCH till the hearing scheduled on February 9 but, he was discharged from the hospital and sent to jail without proper treatment,” Mr. Bharti said.

“The MP was kept in general ward of the hospital where he initially was kept on on a stretcher as no beds were available there and no food arrangements were made at night. The MP broke into tears during court proceedings because he saw the mismanagement and chaos at the hospital,” Mr. Bharti said.

Earlier on February 7 midnight, the Independent MP was arrested from his residence at Mandiri locality of Patna allegedly for regular non-appearance in a case in the competent court. The case was lodged against him in 1995 at Gardanibagh police station under Section 467 (forgery of documents) of the IPC. A landlord, Vinod Bihari Lal, whose house Mr. Yadav had taken on rent to live but later, allegedly, opened MP’s office, had filed the case in which the court has been issuing warrants against Mr. Yadav and in which he was reportedly not appearing for the last 31 years.
