Over 25,000 join BTC’s record-setting tribute to Zubeen Garg in Kokrajhar

The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) marked the 53rd birth anniversary of singer Zubeen Garg with a large community tribute on Monday, bringing together more than 25,000 participants for a mass performance of his song Mayabini Ratir Bukut. The rendition, sung in both Assamese and Bodo, has been recognised by the Asia Book of Records and the India Book of Records for the highest participation in a cross-cultural performance in the Bodo language.

The gathering was inaugurated by BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary, who joined thousands of citizens, local artists and invited dignitaries in the performance. Sanjay Bhola, adjudicator for both record-keeping organisations, attended the programme and formally handed over certificates and medals to the BTC Chief, acknowledging the achievement.

Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Barua, addressing those present, commended the initiative and described it as an expression of cultural unity that brought together communities linked by Garg’s music.

Earlier in the evening, a candlelight tribute was held where 53 candles were lit to mark the singer’s 53rd birth anniversary. Local artists also performed a cultural programme celebrating his body of work and long-standing influence across Assam and the Northeast.

In his welcome address, Mohilary spoke about Garg’s cultural legacy and thanked the public, performers and organisers for contributing to what he called a historic public tribute.

The event was attended by Cabinet Minister Charan Boro, elected members of the council, senior administrative officials and representatives from various departments.
