Three Army jawans were killed in an ambush by Pakistani troops “on the Indian side of the line of control in Jammu and Kashmir”. The incident occurred when the Indian troops, on a routine patrol in the Kargil sector, were fired upon with artillery and machine guns. Pakistani troops later removed the bodies of the three jawans to their side. The Indian sector commander has lodged a strong protest with his Pakistani counterpart.

Pakistan’s F-16s

The Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, revealed that India has learned from documents taken by the Iranians in the US embassy in Tehran that the F-16 fighter bombers delivered to Pakistan are to be used against India and not in Afghanistan. In an interview published in the latest issue of Newsweek, Gandhi said the situation concerning Pakistan’s nuclear programme was building up in a “very negative direction”. “We have good evidence that they have made progress and circumstantial evidence that they are making a bomb, one that is very much targeted at us,” the Prime Minister said.

AASU Resignations

The All Assam Students Union (AASU) president, Prafulla Mahanta, and the general secretary, Bhrigu Phukan, will resign their posts at a party conference at North Lakhimpur. In the three-day conference, the AASU will hold fresh elections. Massive arrangements are being made for the conference.

World Bank Report

Finance Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh told the International Monetary Fund (IMF) governors that the world economic report prepared by the World Bank staff and other international agencies was a source of deep concern. Singh said at the interim committee of the IMF that events confirmed the apprehensions of the developing countries.
