Dibrugarh: A hardcore insurgent belonging to NSCN (Niki Sumi) surrendered before security forces in the Khonsa area of Arunachal Pradesh on Monday.
The surrendered cadre has been identified as Wangjong Wangsu (37), a self-styled Lieutenant of NSCN (Niki Sumi) and a resident of Longding district in Arunachal Pradesh.
According to officials, acting on specific intelligence inputs regarding the presence of a hardcore insurgent in and around the Khonsa Bazaar area, security forces launched a focused operation on February 2.
Upon reaching the suspected location, field intelligence sources were activated and tasked with establishing contact with the armed Naga extremist and persuading him to surrender.
An official stated that sustained operational pressure combined with relentless negotiations motivated the insurgent to abandon the path of violence and rejoin the mainstream. The continued engagement and assurance from security agencies ultimately yielded positive results, leading to his voluntary surrender.
The insurgent was subsequently taken into custody by a joint team of the 44 Assam Rifles and 26 FIT.
During the operation, security personnel recovered one .32 mm pistol along with four rounds of .32 ammunition, one appointment letter, and one walkie-talkie from his possession.
Officials said the successful surrender highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-based operations and the humane, persuasive approach adopted by security forces in dealing with insurgency-related challenges in the region.
The Assam Rifles, in coordination with other security agencies, reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, security, and stability in the region and stated that efforts would continue to motivate misguided youths to shun violence and return to the mainstream.
