A week after Surbhi Sharma, daughter of an NRI mathematics teacher in Australia, appealed for help to find her missing father, Indian police have uncovered a chilling murder plot.
Four people have been arrested in connection with the case, including the victim’s brother, his brother’s wife, their son and another person allegedly involved in the conspiracy.
The victim, 66-year-old Sunil Sharma, was a mathematics teacher at Diamond Valley College in Australia.
He was close to retirement and had travelled to India to sell two properties. However, he mysteriously went missing shortly after arriving in the country.
Sharma, an Indian-origin Australian citizen, reportedly arrived in India just a day before he disappeared.
Some renovation work was going on at one of his properties ahead of the proposed sale. He is said to have owned properties worth crores in India.
His disappearance first came to light on May 23, when a person in India reported him missing.
Last week, his daughter Surbhi made an emotional appeal seeking help to locate him.
“Anyone who’s met my dad will say he is intelligent, strong and funny, but he is also loving and sensitive. I count myself so lucky to have had a father like him,” she said.
She also said her father often travelled to India, especially after her mother passed away four years ago.
“He goes to India often, especially since my mum passed away four years ago. So he’s just been trying to sell his properties there so he can come back and retire,” she said.
Surbhi further said she and her brother had been advised not to travel to India because family members could also be at risk in matters involving property or money.
By the time she made the appeal, Sharma had allegedly already been killed.
According to reports, Sunil Sharma’s brother Satish Sharma allegedly plotted the murder to take control of his properties through a forged power of attorney. A property dealer is also said to have been part of the plan.
Police suspect that Sunil Sharma was lured to India by Satish in the name of a property deal. After his arrival, the accused allegedly gave him sleeping pills and later killed him by hitting him on the head with a baseball bat.
The accused then allegedly destroyed evidence and dumped the body.
Satish Sharma, his wife, his son and the builder have been arrested in connection with the case.
CCTV footage from one of the properties reportedly showed Sharma arriving and leaving twice while supervising a group of painters on May 22, the last day he was seen alive.
It is not yet clear whether Indian police have recovered Sharma’s body.
