Guwahati: In a significant push to promote cross-regional craft collaboration and sustainable textiles, the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) on Friday unveiled Padma Doree, a unique initiative blending the Eri (Ahimsa) silk traditions of Northeast India with the heritage Chanderi weaving of Madhya Pradesh.
The initiative, launched by MDoNER Secretary Sanjay Jaju, was marked by a fashion showcase that brought together the ethical appeal of Eri silk with the fine textures and motifs of Chanderi textiles, highlighting a fusion of sustainability and craftsmanship.
Calling it a reflection of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat, Jaju said the initiative aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen cultural ties across regions. He also credited Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia for supporting the initiative’s realisation.
“Padma Doree brings together two distinct textile traditions, Eri silk from the Northeast and Chanderi from Madhya Pradesh, not just preserving heritage but also fostering innovation,” Jaju said.
The launch event featured curated exhibitions and live demonstrations by artisans from both regions, offering visitors an immersive look into the textile-making process, from fibre to finished fabric. The three-day exhibition has been designed as an interactive platform, enabling direct engagement between artisans and visitors.
NEHHDC Managing Director Mara Kocho said the initiative aims to create an integrated and sustainable textile ecosystem by bridging regional fibre and weaving traditions.
“Padma Doree is about convergence,of skills, cultures, and sustainable practices, positioning Indian textiles strongly in contemporary markets,” Kocho noted.
The event was attended by noted filmmaker Muzaffar Ali, senior officials from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, representatives from Madhya Pradesh Handloom, along with designers and artisans associated with the project.
Positioned within the broader narrative of sustainable luxury and indigenous knowledge systems, Padma Doree is expected to open new avenues for artisans while reinforcing the relevance of traditional textiles in modern design and global markets.
