Northeast art, craft and cuisine take centre stage at Bodoland University

A week-long exhibition celebrating indigenous art, handloom traditions and food culture from across the Northeast opened today at Bodoland University. The event, being held at the Jwhwlao Nileswar Brahma Auditorium front yard, will continue until 22 November.

Organised under the project Empowering Marginalised Women of the Sixth Scheduled Areas of Assam (EMWSSAA) and supported by the North Eastern Council under the Ministry of DoNER, the exhibition is being held in collaboration with TRIFED. The initiative aims to highlight the region’s diverse craft and weaving traditions while supporting local livelihoods.

The inauguration took place as part of the 150th Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh celebrations marking the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda. Bodoland Territorial Council Chief Hagrama Mohilary, Bodoland University Vice-Chancellor Prof B.L. Ahuja, TRIFED–NER General Manager P.S. Aleng, Bhutan–India Friendship Association representative Dawa Penjor and Colonel David L Khojol of the 135 Infantry Battalion (TA) attended the ceremony.

The programme featured a traditional Dahal Thungri welcome dance, a book release, cultural performances and the formal opening of the exhibition. The inaugural evening will include a ramp walk by Aronai Entertainment showcasing traditional weaves, a musical segment on Zubeen Garg by P. Gogoi, Anshuman Baruah and Pragyashree Phukan, and a performance by The Family Tree Band.

Events through the week include a Tribal Artisan Empanelment Mela by TRIFED on 17 November and a session on oral and written histories of indigenous arts, weaving, ecological crafts, food traditions and languages on 19 November, held under the EMWSSAA project.

Visitors will be able to explore traditional handlooms, eco-friendly crafts and regional cuisines representing communities from across the Northeast.
