Demonstrating that political rivalry need not undermine personal bonds, Janata Dal (Secular) MLA from Gurmitkal, Sharanagowda Kandkur, set an example of courtesy and respect toward an elder — who also happens to be his chief political rival.
Mr. Kandkur was seen holding the hand of former minister Baburao Chinchansur while accompanying Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil to the Kadechur-Badiyal Industrial Area in Yadgir on August 5.
The delegation was visiting a pharmaceutical plant where three workers died and two others were injured following a sulfur dioxide leak early on August 5 morning.
Mr. Chinchansur contested against Sharanagowda’s late father, Naganagowda Kandkur, in the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections and against Sharanagowda in 2023, suffering defeat on both occasions. Despite heated political exchanges during the election campaigns, the two leaders have generally maintained cordial personal relations.
Social media users had previously praised Mr. Kandkur’s sportsmanship when he visited a private hospital in Kalaburagi to check on Mr. Chinchansur, who had sustained severe injuries in a road accident during the peak of the 2023 assembly election campaign.
While political rivalries persisted after the 2023 election, even leading to brief verbal clashes between their respective supporters over protocol disputes in a government programme, the two leaders have consistently shown mutual respect in public.
Following in the footsteps of his late father, who was known for his warmth and respect toward elders, Sharanagowda Kandkur reaffirmed that legacy at the Kadechur-Badiyal plant by holding Mr. Chinchansur’s hand and guiding him through the area.
