Metro system likely to replace metrolite project in Prayagraj | Prayagraj News

Prayagraj: In a major transportation upgrade, authorities are considering the proposal of abandoning the previously planned Metrolite project and replacing it with an upgraded full Metro system. This development comes in response to the city’s rapidly growing population and increasing traffic congestion, necessitating a modern and efficient transit solution. The project envisions a 44-kilometre metro network spanning two routes with a total of 39 stations. The first route will extend from Bamrauli to Jhunsi City Lake, covering 23 kilometres and including 20 stations, while the second route will run from Shantipuram to Chheoki, covering 21 kilometres and 19 stations. A central interchange station will be constructed at Parade Ground to connect the two routes, ensuring seamless passenger transfers. The metro plan has an estimated cost of around Rs 10,000 crore, marking an increase from the initially proposed Rs 8,747 crore for the Metrolite operation. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is scheduled for completion after the Diwali festival, with authorities planning to inspect the fixed routes soon.Sources inform that in a recent meeting, officials from the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) and the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) considered the issue and are unanimous that metro operations will adhere to the previously identified routes designed for the Metrolite. The upgraded metro trains will consist of three coaches and have the capacity to carry over 1,200 passengers simultaneously, substantially enhancing public transport efficiency in the city. This infrastructure upgrade promises to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, providing residents with a faster, cleaner, and more reliable mode of transit. To facilitate the implementation of the project, a Metro Council comprising 30 members—including senior officials from various govt departments—will oversee land acquisition processes. Approximately 100 villages will be affected by land acquisition. The farmers will be compensated at four times the prevailing circle rate to ensure fair remuneration.
