The use of the Army to assist the civil authorities in Punjab for the maintenance of law and order has been extended for an indefinite period. The authorities have been told about the availability of such help from the Army. The notification issued last year placing the services of the Army at the disposal of the state government at the time of Operation Blue Star is valid till June 30. But now it will be effective for an unlimited period.

Bandh Withdrawn

Anti-reservationists withdrew their call for “Gujarat bandh” on May 30 as the stabbing spree continued in the city with at least five people admitted to hospitals during the past 24 hours. The crime branch detained two student leaders of the Akhil Gujarat Navrachana Samiti under the National Security Act in connection with a curfew boycott call that led to police firing in which a six-year-old girl was killed and another youth injured.

Faulty Flats

A report by experts from IIT Delhi has revealed that 512 of the 1,250 self-financing scheme flats constructed by the Delhi Development Authority in the Kishangarh area were built without proper foundation, the leader of BJP in the Delhi Metropolitan Council, Madan Lal Khurana, alleged. He added that the IIT reports had found the four-storey flats dangerous.

Floods After Cyclone

Floods in Comilla and Sylhet districts brought fresh disaster to Bangladesh, already severely battered by the cyclone which, unofficial reports said, left more than 40,000 dead and thousands missing. Official reports said more than 25 lakh people have been affected by the cyclone, which unleashed its fury on coastal areas. They also confirmed 1,170 deaths, but the exact number of those swept away may never be known.
