Manish Tewari Calls SIR ‘Illegal’ | Lok Sabha Debate on Electoral Reforms

In a heated Lok Sabha debate on electoral reforms, Congress MP Manish Tewari termed the Election Commission’s nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls as ‘illegal’. Citing Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, Tewari argued that the law permits special revision only for ‘any’ specific constituency for recorded reasons, not ‘every’ constituency simultaneously. He stated, ‘There is no legal provision for SIR,’ and countered BJP’s references to past revisions by asserting that ‘multiple wrongs don’t make a right’. The Congress leader questioned the constitutional basis of the drive, emphasizing that the Election Commission cannot act beyond its statutory mandate. The BJP questioned if past revisions under Congress rule were also illegal.
