Kerala Students Union activists barged into the Kerala University headquarters during a Syndicate meeting on Tuesday to protest against a recent hike in course fees.
The protest, led by KSU district president Gopu Neyyar, flagged the “unreasonable” increase in admission and eligibility certificate fees for four-year undergraduate courses. The admission fee, which was previously ₹1,850, has been increased to ₹2,655, while the fee for eligibility certificates has gone up from ₹210 to ₹525.
KSU alleged that these hikes were implemented without any prior notice and were approved during a recent Syndicate meeting. The organisation had earlier submitted a complaint to the Vice-Chancellor, demanding a rollback of the fee hike. The decision, they stated, would make higher education increasingly inaccessible to students.
The protesters, who were blocked on their way to the Syndicate room, were forcibly removed by the police. They later relented to demands to disperse following assurances made by university officials to review the decision.
